Abstract:
This study aims at identifying the press coverage of crises in Sudanese newspapers, and the role played by press in economic crises and the ways of solving them, especially the Sudanese economic crisis in December 2014, as it was aggravating in that year, and December witnessed the approval of the Financial Budget for 2015. The study relied on descriptive method which is based on studying phenomenon as it is in reality and works on describing it accurately and expressing it in terms of quantity and quality. Qualitative description shows the phenomenon and explains its characteristics, while the quantitative description provides a numerical expression for it, as it shows its quantity, volume, and the degree of its relationship with other phenomena. It also uses the content analysis of comprehensive calculation sample (December 2014).
Some of the most significant results of the study were as follows:
- Subjects about corruption were ahead all other subjects (27.01%). However, they were confined to caricatures and news, and the coverage tackled the crisis superficially, without studying thoroughly the causes and results. Moreover, subjects like unemployment, black market, and depreciation of Sudanese currency in parallel market were overlooked by press coverage, and came at the end of the list.
- The percentage of trends supporting governmental policies in dealing with the crises was 48.82%, which is an expected result, as no opposition newspapers are published now in Sudan. At the same time, caricature focused on criticizing the budget, corruption, and poverty of the public.
As for most common ways of coverage, news were on the top of the list (54.98%). Results also showed that most of the subjects aimed at informing and reporting (47.87%), and this emphasized the nature of the daily Sudanese news press, while news reportage was missing.
